Life has dealt me a series of bad blows and I have been trying to do this affiliate marketing thing and haven’t got any where with it. Is it even worth my time and effort.

I think its a great strategy to buy existing domains with PR and rankings. Make sure they have good, solid Google rankings but running searches on their indexed pages. Of course its on a case by case basis but you can get somewhere that way...
